About Me

I'm passionate about writing, running, dogs, forests, wildlife and preserving wild spaces. I live with my two dogs - Australian shepherd Finn MacCool, 14, and Alaskan Malamute Conall, seven - in central Vermont, where I moved in 2021 after 15 years in Idaho. I'm happiest when out in nature with my dogs, following their lead, observing the natural world as it changes through the seasons. Follow me on Instagram @rebeccawallick. A sampling of magazine articles and older blog posts can be found on my freelance writing and editing website. Did I mention I'm passionate about dogs?

Kind of a drag when strong winds (and a touch of fresh snow) fill in your hard-earned snowshoe trail from the day before. No worries; Conall was happy to brave today's wind to remake the trail. After the storm, the sun returned, a perfect morning for snowshoeing. The latest storm brought a bunch of snow, adding to what fell over the past two weeks, making up for 2023's meager start. Making a meandering trail across a field in filtered morning sunlight, a few hours before the next winter storm arrived. Letting Conall lead means no straight lines! More fresh snow last night! Getting a little deep for Conall but perfect snowshoeing for me, and Finn sticks right behind me. Our pristine playground was marred by trail trash this morning. Fresh snow and fresh Snowshoe hare tracks to follow = a happy Conall. The sun and cold temperatures returned today, with lots of thick frost clinging to the trees. Windblown frost covered this frozen pond, creating a beautiful texture. Distant frost-covered trees, farm house, red barn, and silos stand out against the pewter sky.
